Nine-year-old Oliver wears his yellow raincoat and red boots while splashing through puddles, a small brass key from Grandpa Elias hanging around his neck. On a gray afternoon a letter arrives, and soon he finds an old suitcase in the attic, its lid set with four tiny keyholes shaped like a leaf, a sun, a maple seed, and a snowflake. Each keyhole opens a small world of its own season, and Oliver learns that the suitcase keeps the seasons turning in balance like a clock.
In the spring world he meets Pip, a hand-sized creature with mossy hair, who explains how the compartments work. In the summer world he finds Ember, who plants seeds eagerly and wishes summer could last forever. When Ember's enthusiasm lets summer spill into autumn and winter, the friends must work together to repair the mechanism and restore its balance.
