Emma lives in a small village set between snowy hills, and winter is the season she loves most. When a fierce snowstorm sweeps through the valley, she delights in the snowballs and snow forts it leaves behind. But the morning after the storm, she notices something strange near the old barn. With a lantern and a basket of warm bread, she steps bravely into the shadows and finds Nim, a gentle pearl-white creature with blue-tipped ears, silver hooves and a moss-green travelling cloak, shivering and far from home.

Emma fetches Grandpa Tom, whose calm wisdom helps the villagers understand that Nim means no harm and is simply lost. Bread, blankets, carrots and soup soon arrive, though not everyone is at ease at first. Emma speaks up for her new friend, asking the villagers to imagine being far from home in a snowstorm.
