High above a village bakery, a copper rooster weather vane has stood on its slender rod for fifty years, observing the sun's daily path and learning every breeze that passes. Each morning the baker greets it as an old friend and reads the arrow to decide how the day's bread will bake. The vane takes pride in this work, yet when the wind whispers of lavender fields, snowy mountains and a wide blue sea, it dreams of flying off to see the places it has only ever pointed toward.
One night a powerful gust tears the vane from its rod and carries it far from the bakery roof. It lands on a fence post beside a wheat field, where a young traveler in a mustard-yellow coat reads its arrow and chooses a safe path. Later it stands near a small harbor, guiding fishermen before they set sail, and a farmer with a felt hat relies on it before the harvest. This tale by Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN follows the vane's journey home and what it learns about usefulness and belonging. It can be read on Online Masal.
