Princess Violet cherishes the palace gardens and each morning hurries through the orchard in her lavender dress to look after the apple and pear trees. This spring, however, the branches stand mostly bare, and she cannot work out why the orchard yields so little fruit. Finding her troubled beneath a quiet tree, Queen Marigold proposes that they search for the answer together, and Violet opens a book about nature, where she learns how bees carry pollen from bloom to bloom.
A tiny golden bee settles on Violet's sleeve and guides her to a wild hive in an old stone wall at the garden's edge. Naming her new friend Buzz, Violet makes a plan, and with the queen's help she receives a patch of land and the seeds she needs. Day after day she digs, plants and waters sunflowers, daisies, lavender and clover, and as the flowers grow, the orchard slowly begins to change.
