Mira lives in a village at the edge of a deep green valley, and each morning she wears her yellow raincoat, carries her brass spyglass, and goes with her songbird Pip to watch the sunrise. When village elder Grandpa Tomas speaks of a golden bridge that shows itself in the valley at dawn and disappears within minutes, she decides to see it for herself.

At the river, the shining bridge fades before Mira and Pip can use it, and five tired travelers arrive hoping to cross. Mira promises to learn the bridge's timing so they can reach the other side safely, returning morning after morning with her spyglass and Pip to observe how long it lasts and when the first sun ray touches the water.
