Explorer Nova lands her small silver ship on an unfamiliar world of deep purple hills and rolling pink fields, where the ground feels as soft as a blanket. Delighted by the strange beauty around her, she runs and jumps in her bright orange space suit, unaware that the velvet moss beneath her boots sighs and bruises with every heavy step. A shy mint-green creature named Moss, keeper of the planet, steps out from behind a pink bush and gently asks her to walk softly, because the ground is alive and feels everything.
Moss teaches Nova that the planet is sensitive: it dims when someone is rough and glows when someone is gentle. Nova finds that slowing down is harder than she expected, and when her quick steps turn the moss dull gray, she learns to apologize and to try again. Moss shows her how to tiptoe, how to enjoy pink singing flowers without picking them, and how to sing to a torn, gray patch of moss so that new velvet can grow back.
