Ruby lives with her grandmother, Grandma Iris, in a small house that smells of cinnamon and rain. One rainy afternoon, Grandma Iris takes her into the attic and shows her an old brown suitcase covered in faded travel stickers, with tarnished brass corners and a frayed red ribbon on its handle. Inside, Ruby finds postcards, smooth stones and small objects wrapped in tissue. Grandma Iris hints that the suitcase has a secret: it collects things, but it also returns them.
That night Ruby discovers what her grandmother meant. The suitcase stands up on tiny feet and tiptoes through a crack in the wall into a secret hallway lined with doors, each painted with a different scene. Following it, Ruby meets Mr. Penhaligon, a gruff lighthouse keeper who lost his lucky blue stone years ago, and watches the suitcase give it back. Night after night she trails the suitcase as it returns a postcard to a lonely girl on a snowy mountain, a tiny teacup to an old lady and a grey stone to a boy who collects them.
