In a green valley where the water runs clear and cool, a river sings a soft, sparkling song that everyone loves to hear. Finn, a young otter with glossy chestnut fur, swims in it every morning, chasing minnows and letting the water tickle his whiskers. One day the river slows down, its music fading to a whisper, and the animals on the bank grow worried: the water is too low for the ducklings to swim and no one knows why their river has become so sleepy.
Finn decides to swim upstream to find the cause, while Mara the heron flies above to keep watch. He discovers that fallen trees have blocked the narrow passage between two mossy banks, and the water can barely squeeze through. Knowing he cannot move the trees alone, Finn accepts help from Pip the kingfisher and Bramble the beaver. Together the four friends plan carefully, agreeing to clear the branches without harming the birds' nests along the banks, and they work slowly and steadily through the day, watching out for one another.
