Emma's greatest joy is painting, and her small brush Pip is always nearby to encourage her. One day she covers her plain white bedroom door with a tall snowy mountain, adding a winding path, pine trees and a little cabin. Pip cautions her that paint dries quickly and that whatever she makes needs care, though Emma does not yet grasp his meaning.
The painted door soon glows, a cold wind rushes from the mountain, and a lost traveler named Thomas steps through, unable to find his way home. With Pip urging haste before the paint dries and the door shuts forever, Emma enters her own painting to lead him back down the mountain.
