Milo is a tiny woodland mouse who lives in a burrow under an ancient oak and spends his mornings gathering seeds with his green leaf satchel. One day he discovers a small crown of living moss sparkling with dewdrops, and when he places it on his head it fits perfectly. The old oak then begins to whisper to him about the forest spring drying up. Although Milo feels far too small to solve such a problem, he decides to follow the roots and learn what is happening.

At the spring he meets Rosie, a robin who can scout from above, and Pip, a shy blue beetle who knows the underground tunnels and carries a rolled leaf map. The friends descend through dark, damp root tunnels and find a chamber where fallen leaves, twigs and mud have packed against a root and dammed the water. The pile is twice Milo's size, too big for one small mouse, but each friend has something to offer.
