On a quiet snowy night, a little polar bear named Pip sits outside his den and watches the northern lights twist across the sky in ribbons of green, pink, and blue. He loves them so much that he wishes he could make them stay, and he decides to try the only way he knows: by painting them. With his wooden paint box and a brush tucked behind one ear, Pip begins to capture the aurora on the white snow, and the result glows so brightly that his friend Mira the arctic hare insists everyone must see it.

Mira carries the paintings in her satchel and calls on Bram, a fast arctic fox in a green explorer's cap, to spread the news across the tundra. Seals, snowy owls, reindeer, and a young musk ox who has never seen the lights all gather to look, and old Olaf the walrus invites the exhibition to his wide icy beach. Along the way Pip must deal with his shyness and his worry that others will not like his work, learning to answer questions, share what he loves, and trust his friends who believe in him.
