Ella, an eight-year-old girl with curly black hair tied in two puffs, spends her sunny mornings at the village library, drawn to the tall window above the door. When light passes through it, the glass glows in reds, blues, yellows, and greens, and she wants to understand how such a window is made. Her curiosity brings her to Grandpa Sol, the village glassmaker, whose workshop holds glass in every color, and he agrees to teach her while warning her that the craft demands patience.

Step by step, Ella learns the glassmaker's trade. Grandpa Sol shows her how to hold the glass cutter safely and roll it gently along a line, and she finds that glass sometimes snaps in the wrong place. She practices each afternoon with her ginger cat Pip wandering the workshop, and her cuts slowly grow straighter. Later she learns leading, fitting pieces into lead strips, and designs her own window of a sun, a tree, and a bird in bright yellow, green, and blue.
