In the village of Sweetbriar, the yearly baking contest brings the smell of warm sugar and bubbling jam to the square. Baker Boris proudly displays his pies, cakes and tarts while children run between the stalls. A small girl named Annie, wearing her yellow polka-dot dress, watches with wide hazel eyes. When the judges finish tasting, one treat remains: a single golden-brown cookie on a tiny paper doily, round and plump, with honey-coloured cracks and sugar crystals that twinkle like tiny stars.
Baker Boris leans close and says the cookie smells more delicious than anything he has ever baked. But the cookie has other ideas. It wiggles, blinks its two tiny eyes and springs to life, leading the whole village on a merry chase through the stalls. It bounces off jam jars, dodges rolling pins and even dances a jig on the baker's floppy hat. Annie, however, does not chase. She watches quietly and notices that the cookie always looks back, as if waiting for something. Written by Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN, this gentle tale can be read on Online Masal.
