Lily looks forward to Saturdays, and this particular one finds her counting her lucky coins on the living room rug. When her favorite shiny coin goes missing, her search under the sofa and behind the curtains leads her fingers to something unexpected beneath the edge of the carpet: a tiny wooden door with a brass knob, no bigger than her thumbnail. Warm light spills out, and a voice like a cricket's chirp answers her whisper.
Out steps Pip, a thumb-sized man in a leaf-stitched tunic and an acorn-cap hat, who welcomes Lily to the miniature kingdom hidden under the carpet. There she meets Marigold, the village seamstress, and learns that the little people's tunnels and thread homes crack and crumble whenever the big people above move heavy furniture. Lily draws a map of the living room floor, and together they plan new tunnels that curve around the sofa and bookshelf, add felt pads to soften the scraping legs, and stitch the walls with stronger thread.
