In a small valley, a chocolate volcano continuously bubbles and releases warm, sweet chocolate rather than lava. The villagers, who are all miniature bakers, gather each morning with buckets and bowls to collect it for their cakes, cookies and pies. Poppy, a young baker with curly ginger hair styled in two bouncing buns, works in the valley's busiest bakery with her Grandpa Bernard and always carries her wooden spoon in her sky-blue apron pocket.
One morning the volcano starts to sputter, hiss and overflow, sending chocolate streams toward the villagers' homes. Poppy hurries to the square to warn everyone, then recalls the underground pipes that carry the chocolate and offers to investigate. At the pipe entrance she meets Pip, a tiny chocolate sprite with caramel-gold eyes and wings like sugar crystals, who explains that hardened caramel is blocking the pipes. Realizing she cannot fix it alone, Poppy fetches Engineer Mabel, and together with Pip and the crew they enter the dark, chocolate-scented tunnels while Grandpa Bernard organizes the bakers to build a protective wall.
