In a village where the streets carry the scent of sugar and cinnamon, a freckled boy named Oliver spends his afternoons gazing into the window of Grandpa Sugar's confectionery shop. On a rainy day, the old confectioner invites him in and reveals a telescope crafted entirely from chocolate, its lenses made of clear sugar candy. According to Grandpa Sugar, it is meant for viewing the planets, provided the viewer has a lively imagination. That evening, with his sparrow Pip perched on his shoulder, Oliver turns the telescope skyward and finds marshmallow moons, caramel comets and a ringed planet of striped peppermint candy.
Night after night, Oliver records the candy planets in his notebook, sketching them and jotting down lists of ingredients. Each discovery sparks a new dessert idea, and he rushes to the shop to recreate these worlds with Grandpa Sugar for the village festival. The two stir, stretch and press their creations while Pip taste-tests and chirps advice. Though the work is messy and sometimes fails, Oliver learns to keep trying with a baker's patience.
