King Hugo, a kind ruler with warm brown skin and a silver beard, treasures books and children and believes learning should reach every corner of his kingdom. When he discovers an old abandoned castle on a hill, he transforms it into a traveling school, adding four giant wooden wheels and filling its rooms with books, games and colorful maps. Driven by the king himself, the castle rolls from village to village like a giant snail with a stone shell, and children run out to meet it. Among them is Pip, a brave girl with messy red hair and a gap-toothed grin, who steps forward to ask whether they can really learn inside and borrow books to take home.
One rainy afternoon, as the castle heads for a new village, its wheels sink deep into the mud of a valley and the great school comes to a stop. Pip, who is aboard helping to sort books, splashes out for help and finds her friend Mira, a calm and thoughtful girl with long braids. Mira brings her gentle farm ox Ollie and a plan: lay planks beneath the wheels for grip and pull together with ropes. Messages go out, and children from many villages arrive carrying ropes, boards and stones, ready to work as one team. This tale by Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN can be read on Online Masal.
