In a wildflower meadow, a gentle unicorn with a soft white coat and flowing silver mane wears a blue ribbon collar that holds her treasured round silver bell, which chimes sweetly with each step. One morning a tiny mouse named Pip, dressed in a little red scarf, scurries into the meadow, and the two quickly become the best of friends. Pip rides between her silver mane and warm neck, and together they share berries, stories, and quiet afternoons watching the clouds drift by.
Then one day the unicorn stops in the middle of a game and cries out that her silver bell is gone. She searches the tall grass and flower beds near the old stone wall but finds nothing, and her sadness makes her walk as if her hooves were heavy. Pip promises to find the bell, tightens his scarf, and sets off across the meadow, checking under leaves and behind rocks. His search leads him to a narrow gap in the old stone wall, a space far too small for the unicorn, a rabbit, or even a fox, but just wide enough for a mouse. This quiet story by Jane MEADOW about courage in small sizes can be read on Kids Tale Book.
