In the town of Colorford, rooftops are painted in bright colors that carry meaning: red for medicine, blue for shelter, yellow for food, and green for help. Travelers arrive from distant places and find what they need just by looking up at the roofs. Rosie, a young artist with curly black hair in two puffs, lives in a small house with an orange roof and keeps a rope belt full of brushes and paint pots. Her fluffy dog Pip follows her everywhere, and she often assists Grandpa Sol, the baker, who believes colors speak without words.
When heavy rain washes the colors from every roof, the town loses its voice, and travelers and villagers alike wander in confusion. Rosie turns to Grandpa Sol, who reminds her that colors are like kind words: when they fade, we must speak up and paint them again. She proposes painting simple symbols so the shapes remain even if the paint washes away, and she gathers the community to work together.
