In the cheerful town of Brightwell, where walls and windows glow with bright paintings, a young detective named Nina lives with her cat, Pip. Wearing a mustard-yellow raincoat and carrying a blue notebook for clues, she is ready whenever a puzzle appears. One sunny morning, Mrs. Brush, the gallery curator, calls with worrying news: the paintings in the art gallery are slowly losing their colors. Nina and Pip set out to solve the mystery.
As Nina investigates, she notices a pattern: the paintings nearest the window have faded the most. At the school, more paintings have turned gray, and she spots tiny sparkles near the faded edges. Following Pip, who sniffs the air toward a small, crooked shop, they meet Mr. Pigment, an elderly inventor with wild grey hair and a paint-splattered purple apron.
