The Secret Recipe

Sophie is a lively girl with messy buns of curly black hair and a gap-toothed grin who loves to cook but has never learned to wait. When her grandpa visits in his olive cardigan and round glasses, he brings her a mysterious brown book of magical recipes: invisible soup, floating pancakes, and biscuits that whistle. Her mum suggests she start with one recipe and read the instructions carefully, but Sophie is already rushing to the kitchen in her cream apron, eager to try everything at once.

Because she skips the important steps, the magic turns against her. Carrots bounce across the floor, pancakes float up to the ceiling, and the biscuits whistle so loudly that the spoons in the drawer begin to sing along. The kitchen becomes a flour-dusted disaster, and Sophie feels like crying. When Mum walks in, she does not get angry; together with Grandpa, she helps catch the runaway vegetables and calm the singing spoons, gently reminding Sophie that good cooking needs patience.
