On the morning of her seventh birthday, Lily follows a wonderful smell into Grandpa Tomas's kitchen and discovers the largest cake she has ever seen, decorated with pink frosting, chocolate-drop eyes, a cherry nose and tiny white shoes. Before she can blow out the candle, the cake blinks, hops off the table and dashes out the door, and Lily sets off after it in her red sneakers.
The chase carries her through the village, where the cake pauses beside children who have never had a birthday surprise, wiggling and dancing and leaving a sprinkle of joy at each stop. As Lily watches, she starts to understand what the cake is showing her, and with Grandpa Tomas and his wooden cart of chairs and candles she makes a new plan for her own celebration.
