Seven-year-old Henry has messy dark brown hair, a gap-toothed grin, and a stubborn belief in answers rather than mysteries. Every Saturday he helps his mom sort the laundry, and every Saturday one single sock disappears, never a pair. His mother shrugs it off as a laundry mystery, but Henry checks under the bed, behind the couch, and inside his red sneakers before deciding to hide beside the washing machine and watch.

What he finds behind the machine is a tiny glowing doorway no bigger than his hand, and beyond it Sock City, a miniature world of houses and trees made from socks. There he meets Pip, the mayor in a striped sock cape and thimble hat, the bouncing Mabel with puff buns and a bottle-cap satchel, and Grandpa Wool, an elderly knitter in a patchwork coat who keeps losing his yarn. They show Henry how single socks become blankets and windows, but Pip admits a problem: without matching pairs, the town can no longer make what it needs.
