Ben, a curious boy with tousled chestnut hair and freckles, follows a meadow path to a grassy hill one sunny afternoon. Resting among the daisies, he hears a soft, tinkling melody rising from beneath the ground and gently digs with his fingers until he finds a small, smooth stone that glows faintly blue and pulses like a tiny heartbeat. He slips it into his satchel and resolves to learn where the music comes from.

Returning the next day in his green rubber boots and striped jumper, Ben follows the melody to a hidden opening behind a clump of ferns and crawls inside. He finds a winding tunnel lit by glowing stones, where tiny people no taller than teacups carve colorful rocks into animals, flowers and stars. Their leader Pippa, a bold head carver with silver-grey hair in two buns, first mistakes him for a giant, while the round elder Grumble polishes stones and insists that every stone has a story. When a massive root from the old oak pushes through the tunnel wall, the miners argue about chopping it, and Ben must help them find a solution that protects both their home and the tree.
