Captain Claw, a small coral-red crab, lives in a cozy rock pool at the edge of the great ocean. Around his middle he wears a scratched brass compass that always points toward lost treasures, and he is sure that gold with his name on it waits somewhere out there. One sunny morning the needle spins and points straight out to sea, so Claw sets off with his friend Pip, a tiny golden seahorse carrying a little seaweed satchel, to find the fortune he has always dreamed of.

The compass leads the two friends past swaying seaweed and colorful fish to a sunken ship, then through twisting coral caves and a kelp forest. At every stop Claw hopes for gold coins, jewels or a chest of pearls, but each time the glinting object turns out to be something else. Disappointed, Claw begins to wonder whether his compass is broken, until Granny Shell, a wise old sea turtle with round spectacles, explains what the friends have really collected.
