On a foggy morning before sunrise, Elsie puts on her yellow raincoat and red boots and takes her woven basket up the hill to look for cloudberries. The mist lies over the hills like a blanket, and she knows the ripest berries grow near the top where the fog is thickest. What she finds there is not fruit but a small cottage with a moss-green roof and two round windows, standing in a place where no house belongs.
The door opens like a smile, and inside Elsie meets Mrs. Moss, who serves cloudberry pancakes with sweet syrup. Mrs. Moss explains that the cottage drifts with the fog from hill to hill and appears only when the morning mist comes in. When the sun starts to thin the mist, the cottage trembles and must find a new resting place, and Elsie runs ahead through the wet grass to help.
