Marina lives by a coral reef that glitters like a jewel box, and each morning she snorkels over the sunlit shallows, counting striped fish and greeting shy seahorses. One day a huge pearl, as tall as a small house, rises from the reef, and its shell-like door opens onto a warm golden glow. Grandpa Coral, the reef elder crowned with anemones, explains that this pearl is an elevator carrying sea creatures between the ocean's depths. Before riding it, Marina must get ready, because the deep is dark and cold and each level brings its own surprises.

She fills her red waterproof backpack with a small flashlight, a snack and a warm cap, then sets off with Grandpa Coral guiding her from the brass control panel. Level by level she travels from the bright reef to the dim twilight zone and on toward the black deep, meeting Finn the lanternfish and other unusual creatures along the way.
