In a warm green garden, a little sunbird with shimmering orange and crimson feathers and a deep purple throat spends her days moving from bloom to bloom, sipping nectar and singing her tiny, tinkling song. The garden is her whole world, and she loves every leaf of it. One morning a shy, palm-sized gecko named Geo peeks out from under a leaf, wearing a little leaf on his head like a hat, and admits he has watched her fly for days but was too timid to say hello. From that day the two become friends: she flies high and sees the whole garden from above, while he climbs low and knows every root and shadow below.

When the dry season arrives, the rain stops, the ground cracks like old bread, and the flowers droop their heads. The two small friends wonder what they can possibly do, but they decide to try. The sunbird soars beyond the garden wall and finds a cool pond hidden behind a mossy rock, while Geo stays low, patting the dry soil, spreading cool mud around the roots, and chasing away hungry bugs.
