Oliver fills his days with maps, sketching them on napkins, school papers and even the back of his hand, while his satchel holds rolled-up charts of invented islands with sandy beaches, secret coves and winding paths. On a rainy afternoon, Grandpa Walter hands him a worn leather map case and reminds him that planning makes exploring both safer and more enjoyable.

That night, as Oliver traces the shoreline of his newest map, the drawn lines begin to shift and the floor softens into sand. On the island he meets Pip, a small fluffy guide in an acorn-cap hat, and together they follow a shell path toward the green hills, pausing to record a twisted tree, a stream and purple flowers. When sunset comes and the way down splits at a fork he never marked, Oliver must rely on his grandfather's advice and his own skills.
