Freddie the fox lives in a cozy den at the edge of a sunny meadow, and on a bright morning he decides to hold a picnic. With his blue neckerchief and a woven straw satchel holding a red-and-white checkered cloth, he sets out to invite his friends: Betsy the rabbit, Nutty the squirrel, and Pip the otter. They gather on a flat, grassy spot near the stream, among soft moss and wildflowers.

When Freddie opens his satchel, he finds only a pile of juicy red berries. Betsy is delighted, but Nutty's tail droops and Pip stays quiet. Freddie gently asks what they like and learns that Nutty prefers nuts and seeds while Pip prefers fish. He then dashes into the forest to gather hazelnuts and acorns, catch two small fish, and dig up carrots from his garden. This tale by Jane MEADOW follows the friends as everyone receives something to enjoy, and it can be read on Kids Tale Book.
