In the deep, dark night forest, a little aye-aye with shaggy brown fur, huge amber eyes, bat-like ears and a long thin tapping finger lives a quiet but lonely life. Carrying a small leaf satchel with a glowing firefly inside, it searches the trees for bugs and whispers to the forest, hoping someone is awake. But the other animals hide when they see its strange fingers and enormous ears, and the aye-aye sighs and follows its firefly deeper into the night.
One evening a tiny mouse lemur with a red berry necklace peeks out from behind a fern and admits that the aye-aye looks scary. The two talk honestly about fear and loneliness, and when a swarm of fireflies blinks a path through the ferns, they decide to follow it together. The aye-aye taps trees to find the safest way while the mouse lemur leaps lightly from branch to branch, and their journey leads them to a hollow old tree that hides a surprising library and its owl librarian.
