Mateo, an eight-year-old who loves the school garden, chooses a small orange butterfly for Miss Rosa's project on wild creatures. With notebook in hand, he sketches the butterfly and wonders about its journeys, then learns at the library that butterflies travel hundreds of miles each year and rely on flowers to rest and sip nectar along the way.

Discovering that the school nature trail lacks flowers, Mateo decides to help by planting sunflower, daisy and marigold seeds with Miss Rosa and the nature club. He waters them and waits, recording each tiny green shoot in his notebook. When the tired butterfly returns before any blooms appear, Mateo worries that nature is taking too long, and he and Miss Rosa find a way to help the trail bloom sooner.
