Thomas arrives by bus to spend the summer with his grandfather Elias, helping tend an old white lighthouse on a rocky point. Days pass with simple tasks such as polishing the lantern, sweeping the stairs and checking the light, yet Grandfather hints that the lighthouse holds a special magic, and Thomas grows curious about the great glass lamp.
On a foggy evening a low horn sounds and a tattered sailing ship drifts toward the rocks. It belongs to Captain Morrow, lost at sea many years before, and the lantern's magic light is fading. A tiny glowing figure, the Lantern Keeper, appears beside the lamp and explains that the light dims as people forget the lost ships, and that only a kind heart can restore it. As more forgotten vessels gather in the fog, Thomas must find a way to help them, guided by the brass compass his grandfather gave him.
