In a bright palace by the sea, King Aldric and his three children prepare for the Festival of the First Bloom. While the others practice bows, young Princess Lina, whose apron pocket brims with paper scraps, practices folding plain sheets into frogs, boats, and stars. Hoping to make something special for the festival, she folds a crimson paper dragon with gold whiskers and a thin gold ribbon around its neck.

To her astonishment, the dragon comes to life and darts out of her room, swooping through the great hall and landing on the king's crown while servants and the royal baker duck out of its way. Lina soon learns the creature is playful rather than naughty, drawn to shiny and sweet things. Using a silver spoon, a sugar cube, and a folded paper hoop, she begins teaching it some manners, discovering patience and gentle guidance along the way.
