Ella, an eight-year-old girl living on a small farm with a red barn and a field of tall grass, cares about animals above all else. When a shy white horse named Snowdrop arrives wearing a simple brown leather halter and a small white star on his forehead, she greets him at the fence. He steps back and lowers his head, and she realizes he is not ready to meet anyone yet.

Rather than pushing, Ella comes each morning with a carrot or a piece of apple, sets it on the fence post, and waits quietly, telling Snowdrop he does not have to come. Day by day the distance between them shrinks, until he sniffs her hand and lets her open the gate and groom his white coat with her wooden brush. This gentle tale by Jane MEADOW follows the slow building of a friendship and can be read on Kids Tale Book.
