Sophie, who lives beside a green meadow, likes to wander and explore. Close to an old stone wall she catches a funny "hee-haw" and finds a knee-high grey donkey with a cream belly, long floppy ears and a red halter carrying a small brass bell. The donkey belongs to old Mr. Hill, who has no time to walk him, so Sophie is allowed to help with his care. She gives him the name Little Grey and promises to look after him.
Day by day she learns what a small animal needs. Each morning she leads him along the path, over the little bridge and around the apple tree, and she keeps his bucket filled with clean water and gives him hay and grain. When clouds gather she checks his shed, spreads straw and wraps him in a soft blue blanket. Jane MEADOW shows care as paying attention, and the tale can be read on Kids Tale Book.
