Maya loves the beach, and on a bright Saturday she sets out in her yellow rain jacket and blue rubber boots, carrying a canvas bag and a magnifying glass. Near the dunes, she meets Ms. Hayes, whose khaki vest bears a horseshoe crab patch, and learns about the protected beach and the volunteers who watch over it.

At the waterline, Maya discovers helmet-shaped creatures with long spiky tails and tiny dark eyes. A junior volunteer named Dev shows her how to count the crabs without touching them, and she fills her notebook with facts: the tail is a tool for flipping over, the blue blood helps make medicine, and the eggs feed shorebirds. When she learns the crabs face troubles, Maya decides they deserve protection and soon puts on a small orange vest to answer visitors’ questions.
