In a sunny garden filled with flowers, Leo enjoys watching birds move among the bushes and wishes they would stay nearby. With his green notebook and his grandfather beside him, he decides to build a birdhouse. His grandfather agrees but suggests they first learn what kind of home the birds need.
Together, they research garden birds and discover that blue tits require small holes to keep larger birds out. They observe a blue tit through binoculars, sketch it, and take notes. In the workshop, they measure, saw, sand, and nail the wooden pieces, with the grandfather teaching Leo to measure twice and cut once. The finished birdhouse has a small round hole, a slanted roof, and a cleaning door, and they mount it on a tree. For days, Leo waits with his notebook open. This gentle tale by Jane MEADOW can be read on Kids Tale Book.
