Pip is a small squirrel living in a cozy oak tree at the edge of a sunny meadow. Each morning she gathers acorns and nuts, and she takes great pride in her magnificent bushy tail, which she brushes until it shines like russet-orange fire. One morning, she reaches back to brush it and finds that her beautiful tail is gone, leaving only a tiny brown tuft. Feeling small and unsure of who she is without it, Pip wraps her red knitted scarf around her neck, takes her little satchel, and sets out to find what she has lost.

Her search leads her to Master Thimble, a magical tailor no taller than a squirrel, who wears a teal tailcoat and a silver thimble for a hat. He explains that Pip's reflection has run away because she forgot how wonderful she truly is, and he teaches her to follow the shimmer to shiny places. Along the way, Pip helps a beetle flip over a leaf and shares an acorn with a hungry baby bird. When a gust of wind carries her scarf into a thorny bush, she climbs up and frees it entirely on her own, learning that kindness and courage shine brighter than any tail.
