Bernard the bear lives in a cozy cave at the edge of a sunny forest, and each morning he puts on his bright red shirt and sky blue helmet to ride his little blue bicycle. There is only one problem: the bicycle is far too small for a big, round bear. His knees pop up near his ears, his paws barely fit the handlebars, and the bike wobbles, squeaks and creaks along the path. Still, Bernard loves the shiny bell and the wobbly basket, so he keeps trying.
When his best friend Bea the beaver visits, she sees the wobbling bear and says the bicycle is much too small for him. Instead of telling him to give it up, Bea, who wears a yellow hard hat and carries an orange tool belt, suggests adapting the bicycle. Together they measure Bernard's long legs and wide arms, draw a plan in the dirt, and spend the afternoon sawing, hammering and sanding a longer, stronger frame.
