In a snug hollow high in a tall oak tree, an owl with soft brown and cream feathers spends its evenings putting on small round wire glasses and a blue scarf before flying out to explore. One night it discovers a pile of old books near a recycling bin and carries them home, drawn in by their smell of adventure and covers that seem like secret doors. Back in the hollow, the owl stacks the books into a paper castle, with large volumes for walls, small ones for towers, a dusty atlas as a drawbridge and a torn map as a flag.
When the finished castle starts to wobble, a little grey mouse with pink ears and a tiny red satchel appears from behind the books. She offers her own collection of old newspapers, crumpled envelopes and colorful flyers, and together the two patch the shaky walls with a sticky flour-and-water paste.
