Pip, a young otter who loves to explore with his reed satchel at his side, follows a sparkling stream one morning to a roaring waterfall. Curiosity leads him through the curtain of water, where he discovers a quiet cave holding books stacked on ledges, in crates and on the floor. The hidden library is cold and damp, and dripping water has left the pages smudged and wrinkled. Seeing the damage, Pip understands he cannot rescue the books by himself.

He hurries to the wise old turtle who lives by the reeds, and together they return to the cave. The turtle, in her round spectacles and soft ochre scarf, shows Pip how to move the books to a dry rock warmed by a sunbeam, dry the pages, mend torn paper, stitch a binding and press a book flat under a smooth stone.
