Pip is a little sugar glider who lives high in the forest trees. With soft grey-brown fur, a cream belly, and big round black eyes full of curiosity, he glides from tree to tree each night, his long fluffy tail curling behind him and a small woven leaf satchel carried along. One evening he lands face to face with a ringtail possum wearing a red scarf, and after a startled silence, the two cautious strangers begin to talk. They meet every evening at the big gum tree, each teaching the other what he does best, and their friendship grows one starry night at a time.

Soon the two friends notice a problem in their forest: many animals cannot cross the gaps between patches of trees. A baby wallaby in a tiny blue beanie stands at the edge, too frightened to jump. Pip and Possum decide to build a safe path high in the trees and seek advice from the Wise Owl, who tells them that the work will require teamwork, help from others, and never giving up. Gathering vines and branches, they bring the whole forest together, from the rabbits and birds to a grumpy old koala, until only one wide gap remains.
