In a bright garden filled with flowers lives Lori, a tiny lorikeet with emerald-green feathers, a red chest and an orange-yellow face, who wears a little woven leaf hat. Each morning he darts from bloom to bloom, sipping nectar and singing, certain that the garden is his own perfect place and that nothing could be better than playing there in the daylight.
One evening Lori meets Pogo, a shy possum with soft grey-brown fur and a twig-and-leaf satchel, who visits the same garden at night because it is quiet and peaceful. Each claims the garden as his own, and their argument grows louder until the flowers droop and the leaves tremble. They agree to keep apart, Lori by day and Pogo by night, but neither feels happy, and that night Lori cannot sleep. Remembering how much better things were when he shared with his brothers and sisters, he begins to wonder whether there is another way.
