Maya enjoys wandering the woods behind her home after rain, and one day a new path leads her to a small stream. Beneath a wet stone she finds a little creature with glossy dark brown skin, bright yellow spots and big round eyes. Unsure what she has discovered, she asks her teacher, Mr. Okafor, who tells her it is a salamander and explains that amphibians like it depend on clean water. That answer stays with Maya, and she begins to wonder whether the stream itself is truly clean.

With Mr. Okafor, her classmates and park ranger Ms. Hartley, Maya learns to test water, recognise signs of pollution and see why salamanders are called tiny messengers about a stream's health. Finding a leaking pipe and clogged trash upstream, the children begin the Stream Savers project, clearing the bank, planting bushes and testing the water week after week. Written by Aysel Banu YAVUZAL, the tale follows Maya from discovery to patient, practical action, and can be read on Masal İzle.
