Maya visits an animal sanctuary with her grandmother, carrying three carrots in her canvas tote bag and wearing yellow rain boots that sink into the mud. There she meets Hannah, who cares for the animals, and Clover, a grey-brown rescue mule with a white blaze on her muzzle and dark-tipped ears that swivel at every sound. When Maya repeats her uncle's claim that mules are stubborn, Hannah gently corrects her: Clover is not stubborn, only careful, and she needs to feel safe before she can trust anyone.

Instead of rushing to pet the mule, Maya learns to watch Clover's ears, to hold hay flat on her palm and stand still, and to brush with soft, round circles. She discovers that Clover has a sensitive stomach and eats grass hay with only a little grain, that one small carrot is a nice treat, and that a treat-filled ball keeps the mule's mind busy. Day after day she returns with a plan and a piece of apple, moving slowly and talking softly, until a rumbling truck startles Clover and Maya stays calm and waits for her to come back.
