Eight-year-old Maya spends her mornings at the pond at the end of her street, equipped with a notebook and pencil, watching and wondering about the world around her. One sunny day, she discovers a tiny turtle no bigger than her palm, with an olive-green shell marked in yellow and curious amber eyes, and names it Pepper. Sitting very still, Maya begins to draw and write down everything she observes, gradually figuring out what a turtle needs: clean water to swim in, plants to hide under, and a quiet muddy bank where nothing loud or scary comes near. Her grandfather, Grandpa Lu, encourages her curiosity and helps her understand that a good habitat provides a turtle with everything it needs.

Maya's careful observations take on a new purpose when she finds a plastic bag floating at the pond's edge and sees Pepper dart away to hide. More trash is caught in the reeds, and she realizes the habitat she has come to love is not as safe as it should be. With Grandpa Lu's encouragement, Maya decides to teach others rather than simply worry. She calls her best friend Rosie, and together they build a small pond exhibit in Grandpa Lu's shed, complete with drawings, facts, painted signs, and a pretend pond made of stones and toy plants.
