Maya adores the parrot printed on her yellow t-shirt, so a Saturday trip with Aunt Rosa to the Parrot Sanctuary feels like a wonderful adventure. Behind the fence she hears squawks, whistles and cheerful chirps, and inside she meets Mr. Dev, a kind keeper who introduces her to Pip, a small green parrot with a red patch on his forehead and a single white feather on his wing.
Mr. Dev explains that parrots are among the smartest birds and that their busy minds need exercise, just as muscles do. When Pip solves a wooden puzzle box and then taps the empty box as if asking for more, Maya learns that a bored parrot can grow sad and even sick. She opens her notebook and offers to help design new puzzles, and with Mr. Dev and Aunt Rosa she builds a spinning wheel of colored cups and a foraging box full of shredded paper and hidden nuts.
