Mia treasures her garden above all other places, and on a cloudy afternoon she finds a tiny prickly visitor beneath the large oak tree: a little hedgehog with a bent quill and a dry oak leaf clinging to its back. Fearing the shy creature may be lost, she brings her father from the shed and her mother from the garden, and the family chooses a calm corner where the hedgehog can rest and hide.
With her green satchel of dry leaves, Mia helps arrange soft bedding, build a small log tunnel and place a shallow water dish with a few mealworms. The family demonstrates how to assist without causing alarm, stepping back and observing from afar as the hedgehog emerges at dusk. Mia later shares the idea with friends at school, and more leaves, signs and safe corners appear in other gardens.
