On a bright morning, Mia heads to her favorite pond in her yellow shirt, blue overalls and red sneakers, a small green satchel at her side. There she hears a tiny "Peep! Peep!" and finds a fluffy yellow duckling with a little orange beak and round dark eyes, wobbling toward the water where its mother waits. An old man named Mr. Chen, leaning on his cane, stops to explain how ducklings learn by staying close to their mother, watching and copying her, and how the little one will grow bigger and stronger with care.

Mia returns every day, and her visits settle into a quiet routine of watching and helping. She picks up litter, politely tells other children that bread can make ducks sick, and removes a tangled fishing line from the water's edge. When wind traps a plastic bag in the reeds, she wades in to free it, then paints a poster with her mother asking visitors to keep the pond clean.
